That said, no activity replaces adult supervision, and you know your child best - if something feels wrong for your toddler's stage, skip it.

We use the standard toilet-paper-tube test: if an object fits through a cardboard tube, a child under three can choke on it. Activities for 1-2 year olds only use pieces larger than that, or materials that dissolve harmlessly like ice, rice paper and cooked pasta.

Stay calm and check what it was. Taste-safe materials such as edible paint, cooked pasta or plain flour dough are not dangerous in small amounts. Go by skills, not birthdays. If your 2 year old still mouths everything, start in the 1-2 section. If your 22 month old already stacks and sorts confidently, the 2-3 activities will suit them better. You can always move up or down - the age ranges are guides, not rules.

Not yet. Our youngest section starts at 12 months, when most children can sit steadily, grasp larger objects and follow simple demonstrations. Many of the sensory activities for 1-2 year olds can be adapted for younger babies with closer supervision, but we do not label them as such.

My toddler loses interest after two minutes. Am I doing something wrong?

No - that is completely normal. A 1 year old may engage for two or three minutes, a 3 year old for ten to fifteen. Short bursts still build skills. Leave the materials out and let your child return to them, and treat the listed duration as an upper limit rather than a target.

Many activities already are: yoghurt paint, cornflour ooze, cooked pasta threading and plain dough are all taste-safe. Taste-safe means harmless in small amounts, not a snack - it is still worth discouraging eating so your child treats materials as materials.
